"DESCRIPCION Y ANALISIS DEL CICLO GANADERO ARGENTINO"
PALABRAS CLAVES: ciclo ganadero, ganado vacuno, existencias, precios, demanda especulativa
SUMMARY
The argentine cattle and beef sector is extremely important for the
domestic economy based on the value of its exports, the supply of food products,
as a job supplier and its contribution to the GDP. The impact the cattle cycle
has on the economy cannot be ignored. The cycle is a consequence of the
biological, economic and social characteristics of animal production. The goal
of this paper was to analyze the behaviour of prices, inventories, and other
indexes during the last forty years. Five inventories cycles were identified
lasting 7 years and 10 months on average each. An absolute maximum of 61 million
heads was reached in 1977. Prices
completed twelve irregular and asymmetric cycles, lasting 3 years and a half on
average each, and tending to get shorter. An absolute minimum was observed in
1983. No causality was found between prices and cattle inventories, reverting
previous findings. Empirical evidence derives a speculative demand for cattle
that could explain variations experienced by inventories. The information
presented here has significant value for policy makers, cattle and agrifood
businessmen.
